Macbeth – Project Shakespeare

In December we, the 7B class, had a workshop about the famous play “Macbeth” by Shakespeare, which was run by an actress from the” Schauspielhaus”Graz .
We got into the storyline of the play through little games and acting exercises, such as learning how to punch someone without hurting him. We also had a drama lesson and learned how to perform on stage. All of us got a small part out of the original script, which we had to learn and perform the best way we were able to. All this on a stage and  in front of our classmates. We think the workshop was a good chance for us to take a look at the world of acting.

In January we went with our English teacher Mrs Held to see the play at the Schauspielhaus Graz and later at the Orpheum where it was performed by Vienna’s English Theatre. Both performances were really good, but the one at the Schauspielhaus was a bit more professional. It was very interesting to compare the  two completely different performances.
In the Schauspielhaus you could literally feel the dark threatening atmosphere. Vienna’s English Theatre chose a different approach. Only three actors and one actress who constantly switched roles were on the small stage. The performance lacked atmosphere but the people did a great job, nevertheless.
In both versions of the play the actors did really well -  so Lady Macbeth was as self-confident and ambitious as she should be and Macbeth was a brave and loyal soldier (at least at the beginning…).
To complete our project we worked in class and learned about the theatre in the Elizabethan Age, about Shakespeare, his language and his role in the world of literature.
